Following a flurry of last-minute bidding, the Winnipeg Goldeyes
have a May 12 opponent.
With an eye on raising money for their Field of Dreams
Foundation, the Goldeyes hosted an eBay auction with the item up for bids being
a chance to play them on Friday, May 12 in a regulation nine-inning game at
CanWest Global Park.
The bidding opened at noon on Monday, April 3 and closed at noon
today. A dozen bids were placed over the course of the auction and the winning
bid of $3,101 was submitted by Winnipeg’s Dave Watson.
"This was an interesting experience," said general
manager Andrew Collier. "There was one bidder who looked to be in line to
win and then to see someone else place what would end up being the high bid
with about 90 seconds to go was kind of exciting."
In addition to playing the Goldeyes, the winning bidder receives uniforms
for every member of their team (up to a maximum of 18 players and/or coaches)
with numbers and namebars. They also receive the services of their own
photographer and a CD of all photos, their own team photo, post-game catered
meal, Goldeyes souvenirs and tickets to see Winnipeg face Joliet in the season
opener on Friday, May 19.
The National creators athletics league event will be like
all other Goldeyes home games, complete with umpires, PA announcer, scoreboard
and national anthem(s). Members of the opposition can also choose their own
intro music (subject to Goldeyes approval).
"We’re looking forward to May 12," said Collier.
"It should be a lot of fun and, ultimately, will generate some money for
Field of Dreams, which we’re always looking to do and was the main reason for
hosting the auction."
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Winnipeg
Goldeyes Field of Dreams Foundation which, since its inception in 1995, has
helped to raise more than $800,000 for children’s charities in Manitoba.
VIPERS MVP SET TO
RETURN
Calgary Vipers MVP Carlos Duncan has signed a new contract for
the upcoming campaign.
Duncan had a career year for Calgary in 2005. His .319 batting
average was the second highest in his eleven year pro career, only one point
less than the .320 he hit for Rio Grande in 2001. Duncan also led the Vipers
with 20 home runs and also was first in hits with 121. Duncan set a new
Northern League record with 59 stolen bases, eclipsing the old mark of 55. He
was caught stealing only seven times during the entire season.
“Getting our best player back is the highlight of the
off-season”, said Vipers Field Manager Mike Busch. “Carlos was one of the best
two or three players in the entire league in 2005. He tells me he has spent the
off-season working on the speed aspect of his game which could be a pretty
scary thought for opposing catchers.”
“Carlos Duncan is not only a great player but a tremendous
ambassador for the Vipers in the community”, said team President Peter Young.
“Last summer he spent time with Spanish speaking students in area schools and
he’s usually the last player around the park signing autographs following a
game. Add in what he brings to us on the field and I believe we have our best
signing for 2006. With the retirement of Juan Thomas I think that Carlos will
definitely provide the leadership for our team”.
Duncan is one of four veteran players scheduled to come to the
Vipers camp which begins on Thursday, May 4. Pitchers Klae Calvert and Javier
Ortiz along with shortstop Digz Edwards will join Duncan.
Duncan was one of six Vipers players selected to the Northern
League’s mid-season North Division All-Star team last season. He was also named
the Northern League’s all-star third baseman in 2005 and chosen as second-team
third baseman in all of Independent Baseball.
