Installing plywood on a deck made of shiplap or tongue and groove decking is highly recommended. Shiplap fir wood resin can dissolve over time. This causes boards to shrink, crack and form knot holes. Between the shiplap boards, which were once tightened together, open spaces develop. The roofing underlayment will eventually leak if it is directly applied over the shiplap. Roof nails can penetrate the shiplap and cause cracking or splitting of the boards, preventing a seal.
